Owner's Introduction
MRC Inc. (MRC) has been producing the internal and external communication systems and supplying the products to the shipyards around the world, contributing to the South Korean shipbuilding industry for 55 years since the company was established in 1961 when there was no infrastructure for all industries. From 1988 when MRC started to build the intercom products in-house, MRC made a record of supplying at least one of the intercom systems including Public Address/General Alarm (PAGA), Auto Telephone System (PABX), Marine Clock System (MCS), Communal Aerial System (CAS), Computer Network System (CNS), CCTV, SAT-TV to 8 000 vessels in July 2016. Supplying such systems to 8 000 vessels in just 26 years from 1990 to July 2016 would be a world record of its kind. Also, that includes supplying to 754 vessels in 2011 alone, which is another record of MRC producing the most in a single year.
MRC has supplied the products to more than 11 countries including South Korea, MRC's home, with 5 814 vessels (72.3%), China with 983 (12.3%), and Japan with 862 (10.8%).
MRC has supplied the products to 118 shipyards and/or customers. Amongst them, the shipyards with the largest quantity supplied are the three shipyards from HHI Group (2 784 vessels, 34.8%): HHI (1 399 vessels, 17.5%), HMD (849 vessels, 10.6%), and HSHI (536 vessels, 6.7%). Also, MRC supplied to DSME (851 vessels, 10.7%), SHI (733 vessels, 9.2%), STX (502 vessels, 6.3%), and HHIC (385 vessels, 4.8%). In Japan, MRC supplied to JMU (259 vessels, 3.2%), Tsuneishi (254 vessels, 3.2%), and in China to CSBC (195 vessels, 2.4%).
MRC has supplied to 960 ship owners: the largest is A.P. Moller-Maersk (130 vessels), then C.P. Offen (107 vessels) and CMA-CGM (107 vessels), Scorpio (104 vessels), and MSC (85 vessels) follow.
By ship class, DNV (1 380 vessels, 17.3%) is the largest, then LR (1 320 vessels, 16.5%), ABS (1 232 vessels, 15.4%), and GL (901 vessels, 11.3%) follow.
By ships’ flag, MRC supplied to total of 74 countries’ ships including ships of Greece (1 134 vessels, 14.2%), Germany (856 vessels, 10.7%), South Korea (443 vessels, 5.6%), Singapore (337 vessels, 4.9%), Italy (381 vessels, 4.8%), and Japan (308 vessels, 3.9%).
As in the vessels' types, MRC has supplied the intercom equipment to 1 797 container vessels (22.6%), 1 644 bulk carriers (20.6%), 1 036 product carriers (13.0%), 831 crude oil carriers (10.4%), and especially 278 out of 422 LNG carriers (66%) that are operational in 2016. Other than those, MRC has also supplied the intercom equipment to 165 military vessels, 187 Ro-Ro car carriers, 216 VLCCs and ULCCs, 269 LPG carriers, 152 chemical tankers, and 139 tankers.
MRC is the only company that supplies equipment to drill ships as well as offshore structures and vessels, and has a reference of having supplied to 127 drill ships as well as 119 Offshore structures and vessels (FPSO, FSRU, FSO, FRU, drilling rig, jack up rig, offshore supply vessel, platform supply vessel, AHTS, etc.). In order to do so, MRC manufactures explosion-proof CCTV systems and explosion-proof speakers that were certified Explosion Proof from DNV.
The type and quantity of the equipment built and supplied by MRC until 30. June 2016 are as follows: PAGA to 6 633 vessels (83%), PABX (Auto Telephone Exchange) to 5 886 vessels (73.6%), CAS (Communal Aerial System) to 5 689 vessels (71.2%), and MCS (Marine Clock System) to 5 223 vessels (65.4%), all out of 7 992 vessels.
Other than the aforementioned types of equipment, MRC supplied CCTV (Including Power Line Communication CCTV), SAT-TV, TVRO, IPTV, Computer Network System, IS-Telephone, VoIP Telephone, Talk-Back System, UPS, UHF, VHF, VSAT, Alarm (Hospital and Gallery Alarm), Entertainment System, IBS, ECC, Bridge Console and so on.
After 2014, in order to supply new equipment to small and medium LNG carriers and LNG bunkering vessels as a new business, MRC established CSI (Cryogenic Solution Incorporated) as a subsidiary company, received TALA (Technical Assistance Licence Agreement) from GTT for Mark-III FLEX Type Membrane LNG Tank, and is now preparing to enter the market of small and medium sized LNG membrane tank. Coming from the experiences of supplying equipment to the offshore structures and vessels, MRC has supplied some of the equipment to LNG bunkering barge being built in the USA (Conrad, Louisiana) and to a FRU built in Indonesia (JSK Shipping). MRC also plans to supply not only the CCTV but also F&G (Fire and Gas), ESDS (Emergency Shutdown System), PI (Process Instrument) to the LNG related ships.
Eui Joong Hwang, the founder of MRC, foresaw that the shipbuilding is the industry that will make South Korea into a highly developed country, established MRC and ran the company for 55 years with all his employees and resources without even a single day off, and finally made MRC into the world's maritime intercom manufacturer second to none. Recently, as the shipbuilding market has gone into a worldwide recession, MRC faced a new challenge of decreased sales. However, this difficulty also gave the company a chance to transform and set new goals. The new maritime gas emissions regulation imposed by IMO, the start of the new era of energy as represented by shale gas, and the worldwide political and economical conflict demand an overhaul in the shipbuilding industry. MRC continues to put an endeavour in research and development in order to adjust to those changes and also to lead in the changes. MRC will incessantly sail towards becoming internationally renowned company for contributing to the vessels’ safety and environmental friendliness by the 100th anniversary.
