Ulsan Information Industry Promotion Agency, MRC, and KSS Shipping announced on the 25th that they have localized the radar for ships in the "Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based heavy cargo mobile logistics platform demonstration project" and then succeeded in acquiring the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) from the DNV.

A radar for ships is an essential equipment for navigation, and all medium and large radars loaded on ships built and operated in Korea are from Japan and Europe. Japanese take up more than 80 percent of the shares.

In the past, the government, research institutes, and companies tried to localize and commercialize the radar for ships, but ended up securing localization technology. It did not receive international certification, which is essential for commercialization, and the main reason was that there was no "test certification infrastructure."

The "test and certification infrastructure" is a test-only ship and a coastal test facility, and is an equipment and facility that can be operated and tested by loading development technology or products on the ship. In particular, a test-only ship that can carry a radar arbitrarily is an essential infrastructure that cannot be replaced by an existing ship.

However, there are no coastal testing facilities in Korea as well as ships dedicated to the test of radar for ships. For this reason, even after developing the radar, it was not possible to verify its performance in connection with land in various marine environments by loading it on a ship and operating it for a long distance.

The Ulsan Information Industry Promotion Agency and radar developer MRC solved this problem using Ulsan Taehwa Lake.
