The intelligent integrated navigation system, often referred to as the "ship's navigation system," was once monopolised by Japan and Norway. However, we can now develop these systems and collect related data independently with our technology.

A 'Ship Integrated Data Centre' manages navigation services like route planning using the collected data, has opened in Ulsan.

Here’s Kim Ok-Cheon with the report.

This is the nation’s first hybrid ship.

The equipment for the intelligent integrated navigation system, known as the ship’s navigation system, has been replaced with domestic equipment.

Previously, Norway and Japan held more than 90% of the market, effectively monopolising this technology. We have obtained internationally recognised classification certification after successfully testing the equipment by operating over 10,000 kilometres for around nine months using only our technology.

[Park Hyun-Chul / Director, Ulsan ICT Promotion Agency: “If we do not localise navigation and communication equipment, like the INS, we will inevitably fall behind in the era of autonomous ships.”]

A Ship Integrated Data Centre, which collects and analyses ship operation data using this locally developed equipment, has now opened in Ulsan.

The ability to integrate and manage data improves ship safety and navigation efficiency, and with accumulated route data, we can also aim for autonomous ships.

[Kim Doo-Gyeom / Mayor of Ulsan: "With the opening of this centre, Ulsan is expected to become a research hub for next-generation smart ships, further enhancing the competitiveness of the shipbuilding and marine industries."]

Ulsan has also announced plans to build an additional integrated performance verification centre next year to grow as the core of Korea’s shipbuilding industry and a key research complex for shipbuilding and marine technology.
