Locally developed maritime navigation and communication equipment, created by the Ulsan ICT Promotion Agency and Ulsan-based companies, is set to enter the global shipping market. Following successful localisation, the expansion into overseas markets will demonstrate the technological capability and performance of Korea's maritime communication equipment.
The Ulsan ICT Promotion Agency (Director Jang Byung-Tae) announced on the 8th that they exhibited six types of maritime communication equipment at the 'SMM 2024' held in Hamburg, Germany, from the 3rd to the 6th, achieving over 40 consultation cases and generating $1 million (approximately KRW 1.3 billion) in business inquiries.
'SMM 2024' is the world’s largest shipbuilding and marine industry exhibition, attended by over 2,500 companies and more than 50,000 visitors globally.
The Ulsan ICT Promotion Agency, together with regional companies including MRC, participated in the Korean Pavilion at 'SMM 2024' organised by KOTRA, showcasing six types of domestically produced maritime communication equipment certified by international classification (MED). These included marine radar, Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), Conning Information Display (CID), Bridge Alarm Management System (BAMS), autopilot systems, and Marine PC & Monitor for the Integrated Navigation System.
They consulted with over 30 buyers from major global shipping, shipbuilding, and logistics companies, including AP Moller Maersk, Bernhard Schulte, CMA CGM, Chogule SBD, and AST Networks. Based on these consultations, it is expected that domestically produced maritime communication equipment will be supplied to over 40 overseas vessels in the future.
The six types of maritime communication equipment exhibited were the result of the "AI-Based Ship Logistics Platform and Navigation System Demonstration Project”, supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT, NIPA, and Ulsan City, and led by the Ulsan ICT Promotion Agency.
Through this project, the Ulsan ICT Promotion Agency and local companies like MRC, successfully localised six types of navigation and communication equipment that were heavily reliant on imports and obtained MED certification. For example, the medium to large ship radar developed by MRC had previously relied entirely on Japanese and European products, with Japanese products dominating over 80% of the market.
Meanwhile, the Ulsan ICT Promotion Agency also showcased the 'P2P (Port to Port) Digital Logistics Platform' at the 'SCM Fair 2024,' held at KINTEX, Gyeonggi Province, from the 4th to the 6th, and conducted over 40 consultations with potential customers such as Samsung SDS, Taeyang Shipping, and Sebang.
The 'P2P Digital Logistics Platform' is also a product of the 'AI-Based Ship Logistics Platform and Navigation System Demonstration Project' and is designed to enhance maritime digital transformation and improve the efficiency of coastal logistics services.
The Ulsan ICT Promotion Agency plans to establish pilot implementations on the Ulsan Taehwa and at the onshore control centre, with the system initially being used for coastal transport of heavy cargo such as ship steel plates.
Director Jang Byung-Tae of the Ulsan ICT Promotion Agency said, "We have successfully showcased the excellence of domestically produced maritime communication equipment to an international audience and secured potential customers. We will prepare follow-up programmes after the exhibition to turn these consultations into actual contracts
