With the advancement of the automotive industry revolution, the importance of applying AI and ICT (information and communication technology) convergence technologies to the shipbuilding and maritime sectors is increasingly recognised.
In response, this past July, the Ministry of Science and ICT held the launch ceremony for the 'AI-Based Ship Logistics Platform and Navigation System Demonstration Project', marking the official beginning of the digital transformation of Korea’s shipbuilding and maritime industries.
The detailed initiatives include establishing an AI-based intelligent logistics platform for integrated management of cargo and transport data, localising and international certification of the Integrated Navigation System (INS), which was previously 100% reliant on imports, and demonstrating AI-based ship operations.
Shipping accounts for approximately 99.7% of the transport of goods in and out of Korea, playing an essential role in cargo transportation. This importance is even more pronounced in current times, where air routes are restricted.
Experts estimate this project will generate an economic ripple effect, leading to an induced production value of 71.2 billion KRW and an added value of 35.2 billion KRW. Furthermore, if the newly developed technologies are applied to approximately 2,300 domestic ships built or retrofitted over the next decade, an economic impact of around 700 billion KRW is expected.
Additionally, the project is anticipated to reduce the dependence of domestic shipbuilding and maritime companies on foreign technologies, strengthen the competitiveness of the domestic industry, and create new markets for the ICT-converged maritime sector.
Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, MRC Inc. is leveraging its expertise in marine equipment, participating in the 'AI-Based Ship Logistics Platform and Navigation System Demonstration Project' to contribute to the 'advancement and localisation of ship navigation and communication equipment'.
By integrating AI and ICT convergence technologies into its existing and newly developed marine equipment, MRC aims to solidify its position in the shipbuilding and maritime industries and seize the opportunity to rise as a global company.
